Part 2: Tips to get more out of your Laptop battery

This is the continuation of my battery saving tips for Laptop users, Read part 1 here

vi. The brightness of the screen of your Laptop is a major battery killer. Which implies that turning the brightness down can make a huge difference to the amount of power the display consumes.

If you use a Laptop/Tablet that automatically adjusts the screen brightness to suit ambient lighting conditions, most producers ideas of correct brightness are often overly bright, especially when you are using your device indoors. Its better to neglect screensaver, just get your Laptop/Tablet to sleep when it is idle instead of using power to display random pictures.

vii. If your connected USB devices does not have its own charger that implies its bus powered, so its getting its power from your gadget. Its better to unplug anything you do not need right now. Note that devices do not need to be in use to draw power. This is apparent with older USB Wi-Fi adapters, which can draw a surprising amount of power. Recent adapters 801.11n and 802.11ac are more energy efficient, but they will still draw power if they are connected to your device.

viii. The more functions on your Laptop, the more power it will need to do it, so it is better to have less of a load put on your system. Do not just close apparent apps – ensure to use Windows System Configuration Utility (MSCONFIG) or Mac's Activity Monitor to spot and stop any task hungry services and/or apps that are running.

ix. Treat your laptop or tablet well, do not leave it locked in a car on a hot day. Heat and cold both adversely affects our battery lifespan, so do not store your Laptop/Tablet in too hot or too cold conditions. You do not want to use them in extremely hot or cold conditions either, because that can have disastrous effects on your device's performance and battery use. If the temperature's of your environment is uncomfortable for you it's not doing your battery any favours either.

Have you tried these tips and noticed any improvement, please share with us by leaving a comment.

Part 1: Tips to get more out of your Laptop battery

I want to share with you some simple tips on how to get more out of your Laptop or Tablet battery. By following these simple steps you can ensure a better battery life for your device.

i. If you intend to travel or leave your Laptop/Tablet without using it for a while, then its better not to leave it with zero charge or a full charge, as both of these options can reduce the lifespan of your battery. Beware among the two, leaving a zero charge is the worst, as it may not recharge again. Similarly, if you are going to be storing the Laptop/Tablet for a while, manufacturers recommend you store batteries or battery-powered devices with a half-charge.

ii. Just like any other device, Batteries do not last forever, and as they become old they become less efficient. Windows will notify you if your battery's health is not good, but you can also check it by yourself using a hidden Windows command. Simply, press start Command Prompt and run it as Administrator. Now type "power cfg /batteryreport" and press Enter.

Windows will now display an HTML document called Battery-Report in the root of your C: drive, and two key bits of information are available: the design capacity, which is how much power the battery is supposed to stored, and the full charge capacity, which is what you're actually getting. If you observe a huge difference between the two, maybe it is time for a new battery.

iii. Also do not conclude that an unhappy battery is a broken battery, it may be that your battery needs to be recalibrated. An improperly calibrated battery can give Windows the wrong information about its remaining charge, and this may even shut your system down without warning.

iv. Many producers provide utilities to do recalibration for you, but if not it's an easy do it yourself job - fully charge it, let it sit for a while to cool down, then go into power options and set critical battery level to 5% and critical battery action to Hibernate. Run the computer until it shuts down, let it sit for a few hours and then charge it back up.

v. Windows users can choose the Balanced or Power Saver power plans to reduce battery drain. Balanced predicts when you need power and when you don't, while Power Saver gives preference for battery saving over performance. You can also adjust the plans to fully customise your Laptop power saving settings.

How to know the quality and work performance of your Modem, Flash drives and USB cables

According to Wikipedia ''a USB, short for Universal Serial Bus, is an industry standard developed in the mid-1990s that defines the cables, connectors and communications protocols used in a bus for connection, communication, and power supply between computers and electronic devices''.

However, as a Smartphone user, we need to be weary of the quality of USB cables we use or about to purchase. In this write-up i want to share with you the easiest method of differentiating a quality USB cable from a fake one. This is because using a fake USB would provide a little or partial contact and could sometimes be fatal.

Pick your USB and look through the two holes that shows the contact, if the colour of the conductor there is Golden, this depicts Copper  was used to produce it and its of high quality. Copper unlike other metals has high conductivity and high Tensile strength.

On the contrary, if the colour of the conductor is Silver, this depicts Aluminium was used to produce it. Be warned, this is a fake USB cable. Aluminium has been rated to have 60% of the conductivity of its rival Copper and a very low tensile strength which tears it apart when subjected to a lot of stress. This results in fluctuation or partial connection of your USB cable.

This process can also be used to know the quality of your modem and flash drives.

So when next you want to buy a cable, modem or flash drive - don't let any seller fool you, use this method to screen and get the best cable for yourself.

Google unveils 'undo send' button so email users can retrieve embarrassing messages

Google yesterday added the ''Undo'' feature to its Gmail platform as the Undo Send feature has moved from Gmail Labs in the Web version of Google’s email service. Labs is where Google adds experimental features, and the most successful of those features eventually get out of there and become actual options in the Gmail Settings.

With this new feature users of Gmail will be given options of Ten, Twenty or Thirty seconds to retrieve emails they wish they had never sent from PC/laptops. To activate this feature users will have to go to general tab of settings for Gmail on their desktop/laptop as seen in the picture below.

After an email has been successfully sent, a thin yellow bar will appear at the top of the screen, giving users the chance to quickly cancel its delivery.

This feature is not yet available for Emails sent on Tablets or Smartphones, only Emails sent from Desktops/Laptops can for now be withdrawn.

Tips on how to turn your Laptop into a wireless hotspot, windows 8.1, 8 and 7

Most PC/Laptop users would be wondering how set up their laptop as a wireless hotspot. In-other words how to share your your PC/Laptop internet with other devices such as your smartphone or other devices.
Windows 7 and 8.1 PC owners have two methods to do this with different levels of expertise to set up. One of it requires you to download a free piece of software that does most of the procedure, however the other method will delve you into the command line of the PC/Laptop in question to set it up to share your connection.
METHOD 1
Tech enthusiasts have stated that Virtual Router method takes the simple elements of setting up a connection and brings them together in a program that is free to download and takes away all the hassle of creating a hotspot. Download here.
On completion of the download of the software, it immediately shows you the option to give the network a custom name (SSID) as well as a password that can be changed at any time. Afterwords a simple clicking of 'start virtual router' will let the software work its magic. Devices connected will be listed along with its IP address and MAC address to allow you keep tabs on everything that is going on.
Whilst it isn't comparable with an actual Wi-Fi connection from a router, it will suffice you if you don't have a router. All you need for this a USB dongle, and you will be able to connect every smartphone and tablet in your household to your Laptop.
METHOD 2
You can also set up a wireless router on your Windows 7 or 8.1 PC by using the command line method.

As a Laptop user you need to run an elevated command line to get to the correct page and this is easily done. First off press Windows+R at the same time to reveal the Run box. Here type in 'tskmgr' to open up the Task Manager. Navigate to File, then Run new task. In the text field type in 'cmd' and then check the box next to Create this task with administrative privileges.
When it opens, type in the following command:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=MyNet key=MyPassword
Replace 'MyNet' with a name you want to use for the custom network, and 'MyPassword' with a password that is hard to guess. Press enter to create it and then type in the following text:
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
Press enter again to start it up.
Lastly, go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Centre > Change Adapter Settings, right click your internet connection and select Properties. Select the Sharing tab and then check 'Allow other network users to connect…' and pick the virtual Wi-Fi adapter name you just created.
The two methods are very useful ways to get a Wi-Fi connection to other devices around the home if you don't have a router and set up takes just minutes regardless of the program you decide to use.
Microsoft will likely introduce a dedicated wireless hotspot to the desktop version of Windows 10 later this year, as the mobile version will certainly have one.

Google+ profile links have began disappearing from Google

Check the arrow in the diagram, you will see the + sign after the name has disappeared

Google has recently made a little change to its services, with the disappearance of the Google+ profile link from its popular platforms like Gmail or Maps. You will notice that your name at the top right that would link to your Google+ profile is no more linking.

If you observe now, you will notice that it is, in fact, just your name and is no longer linked to your Google+ profile. The search giant has un-linked all its services from Google+ so you will no longer see profile links while using other Google services.

Recently Google launched the updated Photos service, which also got separated from Google+ and turned into a standalone service. Rumors have been on for a while now that
Google+ may soon fade away, and all the recent decisions makes tech enthusiasts feel more certain that either Google+’s days are numbered or that it will be relegated to a small part of the company and not given much focus.

Google+ ever since its creation has not yielded the expected result unlike its major rival Facebook which has witnessed massive success. Lets just keep our fingers crossed and see what Google's next action will be. Whats you take on this? Would you prefer Google to stay?

Microsoft reveals what you’ll lose by upgrading to Windows 10

Microsoft announced yesterday that it will be launching Windows 10 on July 29th, creating a platform for Windows 7 and 8.1 users to reserve their free upgrade with a notification in their task bar.

However, while Microsoft has been quick in highlighting all the attractive new features in the upcoming OS, it's been a bit stealth when it comes to spelling out the limitations, including making updates automatic for Windows 10 Home users.

Among the most apparent loss is the software losses for the old platforms. Although most of these will only affect a handful number of users, but upgrading will mean saying goodbye to following software;

i. If you have Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, or Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center and you install Windows 10, Windows Media Center will be removed.
ii. Watching DVDs requires separate playback software
iii. Windows 7 desktop gadgets will be removed as part of installing Windows 10.
iv. Windows 10 Home users will have updates from Windows Update automatically available. Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise users will have the ability to defer updates.
v. Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Hearts Games that come pre-installed on Windows 7 will be removed as part of installing the Windows 10 upgrade. Microsoft has released our version of Solitaire and Minesweeper called the “Microsoft Solitaire Collection” and “Microsoft Minesweeper.”
vi. If you have a USB floppy drive, you will need to download the latest driver from Windows Update or from the manufacturer's website.
vii. If you have Windows Live Essentials installed on your system, the OneDrive application is removed and replaced with the inbox version of OneDrive.

System requirements for the new Operating system have also been released

i. Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC
ii. RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit
iii. Hard disk space: 16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS
iv. Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver
v. Display: 1024x600

“Windows 10 is the last version of Windows Operating system”, says Microsoft

Could this be Microsoft's last straw as the software giant's employee and developer
evangelist Jerry Nixon has hinted at Microsoft’s Ignite conference, that “Right now we’re releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we’re all still working on Windows 10.” The statement seems like Microsoft won’t be releasing any more versions of Windows 10, which is true more or less.

Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows, in this sense there will not be any major releases of Windows hereafter. The software giant plans to turn Windows into a service, where it will only continue to get updates but there won’t be any major releases. The OS has now become so broad to the point where Microsoft can update parts of the OS individually, which is exactly it plans. The next update is predicted to be in 2016, code-named Windows Redstone, but it will still be Windows 10, and not 11 or anything else. Basically, no more new Windows releases.

As a user or customer, this new policy probably doesn’t change much. Users will continue to get free updates on a monthly basis to ensure your Windows experience continues to work perfectly. There may not be big numbered releases to expect, but Windows itself will continue to evolve and get better.

How to use your WhatsApp directly on Opera and Firefox PC browsers

When WhatsApp released a desktop version of its messaging service in January, it worked only with Google Chrome. But that usage has been extended, as the company has made the announcement that the client is now also compatible with Firefox and Opera PC browsers.

The sign up process remains the same for the process (read here), which means Opera and Firefox users will also have to scan a QR code from within WhatsApp on their smartphone, something which can be done through a new Menu option, labeled WhatsApp Web.

A point worth mentioning is that the aforementioned option is going to be available to you if you use the app on Android,  Windows Phone, or Nokia’s old S60 OS,
BlackBerry.

Microsoft: Mobile Windows 10 will run iPhone and Android apps

Microsoft recently made the announcement that its anticipated windows 10 for mobile will allow Android and iOS apps to run in the operating system.

While making a keynote speech at the Build 2015 event, Microsoft’s Terry Myerson stated that his company (Microsoft) would offer developers the option to easily transfer apps onto Windows 10.

The Software giant has been working closely with King, makers of the hit game Candy Crush, to design a system which can easily allow mobile apps to run on the desktop.

All designers will need to do is 'port over' their existing designs, which should be a relatively simple process.

Tech geeks were fiiled with cheers in the auditorium as Myerson spoke.

Many tech geeks took to internet to express their delight and surprise at the announcement.

Users can now download and/or delete all their google search history

Search giant Google has recently offered users the opportunity to download their entire search history or wipe it forever.

Google will now offer every user the chance to view all past searches and download the information as a zip file.

Google search engine keeps a record of everything you search for, giving it an exceptional insight into the lives of hundreds of millions of people.

Until recently, this information has been saved quietly in one of Google's mysterious computer hubs. Users can now have complete access to this information

You can download yours by following these instructions.

But careful though, Google has stated that its a bad idea to "download your past searches on public computers", because everyone will see what secret (or boring) websites you visit.

Users also have the option to delete this information forever and ensure Google never again stores your search history. Isn't this amazing!

The search giant first started testing its history-viewing option last year, but it's now available to all users.

Microsoft introduces 'Spartan' as its new official web browser for windows 10

Great news as software giant Microsoft has officially confirmed it is taking off the Internet Explorer web browser to pave way for a faster, cleaner browser for its upcoming Windows 10 operating system.

Microsoft's new browser, codenamed Project Spartan, will compete with the likes of Google's popular Chrome browser and Mozilla's Firefox.

The old Internet Explorer brand has been Microsoft's browser since 1995, but over time it has depreciated in favour due to being prone to bugs and
slower than its rivals.

"We're presently researching what the new brand, or the new name, for our web browser should be in Windows 10," Microsoft’s marketing chief Chris Capossela mentioned at a conference yesterday.

The software giant has already shared some of the details surrounding the new "Spartan" browser. Mainly that it will be able to support Chrome extensions developed for Google's browser.

Also, like Google's offering, it'll be stripped down for speed and will be available for use on mobile devices like tablets and smartphones.

The software giant isn't limiting it to Windows Phone either as it will appear on Android and iOS devices before the end of the year.

The new web browser is part of Microsoft's grand plans for Windows 10 in 2015.

5 tips on how to maintain your Laptops

Here are a few tips on how to maintain your Laptops:

i. Avoid dust at all times
Dust could be a laptop’s nemesis, it’ll work its approach inside the chassis and risks clogging fans and overheating your PC’s parts. There are a number of straightforward steps you'll be able to take to cut back the probabilities of dust finding its way into your pc though.

The easiest is to keep it safely hidden in a case or sleeve once not in use. If dust will work its way inside though, you {can|you'll|you'll be able to} blast it free employing a little can of compressed air, out there from pc stores.
