MasterCard announced yesterday that it's planning to introduce a layer of biometric security to its credit cards and all users will do henceforth is simply take a selfie for their transactions.
This new biometric security will produce a digitized map of your face, change that map into a hash and compare it to the hash stored on the company's server. Henceforth, MasterCard users will be able to pay through a mobile app with either by staring into the device and blinking once or by their fingerprints. The eye blink is designed to prevent scammers from just holding up a picture of you to spoof the system.
Users will be required to download the MasterCard phone app to use this new feature. After a user pays for something, he/she will see an authorization pop-up having various options. You can now choose the facial recognition option, stare at the device, and then blink to snap a picture of yourself – that’s it.
The company reportedly already partnered with Google, Blackberry, Microsoft and Apple with hopes to kick-off a limited 500-person pilot program later this year. Once the new system has proven successful, it could be available to the public as early as next year.
